Step 4

Responsible Self-Talk

  • self-talk
  • mindset
  • emotions
Do not speak to yourself in a way that makes action harder.

This is not about fake affirmations. It is honest, useful self-talk.

Instead of harmful self-talk

  • “I’m lazy.”
  • “I always ruin everything.”
  • “I’m behind forever.”
  • “I can’t change.”

Use a Pathlight replacement

  • “I am stuck, but I can start small.”
  • “I wasted today, but I can still choose my next action.”
  • “I am learning discipline.”
  • “I am not my worst day.”
  • “I can begin again without insulting myself.”

Exercise

  1. 1Write the sentence you keep saying about yourself.
  2. 2Ask: does this make action easier or harder?
  3. 3Replace it with a sentence that is honest but useful.

“I’m so lazy.”

“I’m struggling to start, so I need to make the first step smaller.”
